Sunny but cold

Sunday - today the temperature is minus 40. But we're fortunate, no wind chill. Wood smoke from all the chimneys curls straight into the air. And the sun is out - rises above the horizon at 11:30 now, although there's light in the sky at 9:30 a.m. The orange ball is dazzling as it moves in a straight line along the horizon just above the distant snow peaked mountains, and then slowly sinks behind the horizon around 3 p.m. But it's light until 4:00 p.m. now. Each day there's longer daylight. While it's up there's a pink glow on the mountains and there's heat in the sunlight.

Ate caribou ribs last night - put in a pan with a bit of oil, add a potato cut in half and cover. Cook slowly in the oven at 245 degrees for 6 hours. Delicious!

Caribou are at Crow Flats and people are driving out there on their snowmobiles to hunt. Takes about five hours to get to where the caribou are. One hunter sank through the deep snow and through overflow ice that hadn't frozen completely with being insulated by the snow. He managed to get his machine out and unfrozen. People are anxious for fresh caribou meat.
